For many students, the second week in March was just another week in the school year.

For students in Linda Chester’s special education courses, it was the week their wishes came true.

As part of the Tulare Western High School’s leadership program, each of Chester’s students were granted one of their wishes. Some students made the front page of the school newspaper, others had In N Out Burger for lunch, and one student had the chance to DJ during lunch break.

This is the first year the leadership program has added Wish Week to the more than 120 events they put on throughout the year.

The week culminated with a lunchtime performance on Friday by the Mustang cheerleaders. They were joined by Ivory Renteria, a junior.

Ivory danced and performed two cheers with the squad as onlookers cheered her name and snapped pictures.

“I just liked everyone taking pictures of me,” she said after her wish was granted.

Sarah Wilbur, leadership president, said one of her favorite wishes granted came when a student wished to join the school’s choir class.

“It was nothing different, just a regular choir class. But she loved it,” Wilbur said. “The students that are in the class say ‘oh man, I have to go to class,’ but she treasured it. It was really eye opening.”

The week wasn’t just special for those students involved, Wilbur said.

“I truly believe those who just witnessed these wishes come true valued it an equal amount as those who received,” she said. “It was a fun week.”
