Selena tribute show returns to downtown Visalia

Rosalinda Verde and Mezcal will join forces again Thursday, Oct. 30 at Crawdaddy's in downtown Visalia for a tribute show honoring the celebrated Mexican-American singer Selena, who was murdered two decades ago.

Verde and Mezcal had successful Selena tribute back in July and August in downtown Visalia.

Back in July, Verde told Choices she was preparing for the performance since childhood.

"Growing up, Selena was everything. She was everybody's girl. She could be your neighbor or your best friend," said Verde, a professionally trained musician, who also founded and runs the Visalia Opera Company.

Selena was only 23 when she was shot to death by her fan club ex-president, who was fired for embezzling funds. Since her death, Selena has gone on to sell more than 90 million records worldwide, becoming one of the most widely known Mexican-American singers of all time.

Her album "Dreaming of You" became both the first posthumously released and primarily Spanish-language record to debut at the top of the Billboard 200. It went on to spawn six hit singles including the title track and "I Could Fall in Love." The singer was further immortalized in film by a star-making Jennifer Lopez performance in the 1997 biopic, "Selena."
